Nature and Biodiversity Management

UltraTech is committed to conducting its business responsibly and recognises the importance of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services for the long-term sustainability of its operations. The Company takes concerted actions to protect, restore and promote all forms of life in the ecosystem.

UltraTech recognises that our business can have an impact on the local ecology where we operate and is aware of the important role it must play in protecting biodiversity and the ecosystem.

Governed by our Biodiversity policy, UltraTech is committed to maximise biodiversity around its plants and quarry sites under various biodiversity management initiatives. The Company has started monitoring the ecological evolution of its sites to help identify risks and opportunities. We are also committed to No Net loss which is in line with the Aditya Birla Group Biodiversity Policy. In FY19, UltraTech committed to biodiversity risk and impact assessments across all its 24 integrated units, reinforcing its commitment to responsible business practices. By FY25, UltraTech had completed biodiversity assessments across all 24 of its operational integrated units, each conducted within a 10 km radius of the site. Having met this target, UltraTech has since expanded its focus to include recent mergers, acquisitions and greenfield and brownfield projects. With this, as of FY26, 68% of UltraTech’s integrated units have Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) that align with its commitment to achieving ‘No Net Loss’.

 

Post completion of assessment, all findings were directly translated into site specific Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) aligned with the mitigation hierarchy. UltraTech’s initial 24 integrated units have developed and initiated implementation of BMPs, focused on protecting, restoring, and enhancing local ecosystems and ecological balance. Furthermore, Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) have been established at eight of our locations to oversee the implementation of the recommendations from BMPs. We are working towards formulating the BMCs at all locations as we work towards implementing the BMP.

Our engagement with IUCN

UltraTech has collaborated with International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to create a scientific and systematic approach towards biodiversity management. IUCN is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it.

UltraTech's engagement with IUCN has evolved from the ground level through its unit Sewagram Cement Works (SCW) in Gujarat and at the corporate level to develop policies and technical standards to ground level comprehensive assessment and data collection at four more units.

The sites are selected based on the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool report which we have used for initial screening of all our units. We have identified the sites which are high in biodiversity and a comprehensive Biodiversity Management Plan is being prepared for these sites.

Sewagram Cement Works - where it all began

In 2017, UltraTech entered into an agreement with IUCN for developing a detailed biodiversity and ecosystem services management plan for Sewagram Cement Works (SCW) located in Gujarat. IUCN carried out a comprehensive baseline assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services in and around SCW's area of operations. The results from the biodiversity assessment were used to develop a robust Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) for the unit. The BMP includes a suite of measures designed to avoid, minimise, rectify, and/or compensate for impacts to biodiversity resulting from the development and operations of the cement unit and mines area. Native nursery development, on-site thorn forest habitat development and restoration of grasslands are some of the biodiversity projects implemented at SCW over the years.

Key Achievements

  • 24 integrated units have been assessed for potential biodiversity-related features through the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT).
  • Five of our sites have been assessed to be located in ecologically sensitive areas. All of these five sites have completed three-seasonal biodiversity impact and risk assessment and have well established biodiversity management plans.
  • Biodiversity assessment has been undertaken at 24 of our integrated plants.
  • In line with its Biodiversity policy, UltraTech aims to achieve ‘No Net Loss’ at all sites by 2050.
  • Innovative concept of Miyawaki forests was adopted to create mini forests at five of our integrated units and one grinding unit, over the last five years. Cumulatively in FY26, almost 30,000 native trees were planted as part of this initiative to increase the green cover in XX of our manufacturing units.
  • In FY26, over 6.5 lakh saplings were planted in and around the Company’s units, achieving an almost 85.5% survival rate. This initiative has contributed to the enhancement of floral diversity in proximity to our operational sites, thereby helping improve habitat quality.

Way Forward

Over the coming years, UltraTech will continue to strengthen its biodiversity stewardship efforts by implementing Biodiversity Management Plans (BMPs) across all integrated manufacturing units and progressively extending biodiversity considerations to other operational sites. The Company will integrate biodiversity into business planning through regular monitoring, site-specific restoration initiatives, and science-based conservation measures to enhance ecosystem resilience.

 

In parallel, UltraTech will deepen engagement with suppliers, contractors and local communities to promote biodiversity conservation across the value chain. The Company will strengthen biodiversity risk and opportunity assessments, enhance nature-related disclosures in line with evolving global frameworks such as TNFD, and collaborate with industry bodies, research institutions and conservation organisations to support landscape-level conservation and contribute towards a nature-positive future.

Collaboration with External Partners

We are working together with the external agencies to create a scientific and systematic approach towards biodiversity management.

 

Our engagement with agencies has evolved through the organisation’s involvement at several Integrated units. At the corporate level, we are collaborating with various Biodiversity experts, ensuring scientific rigour, robust data analysis, and the development of site-specific BMPs. Our long-standing partnership with the IUCN has enabled joint ecological assessments, the application of its Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool for site prioritisation, development of technical biodiversity standards for our operations, and community engagement for conservation. We also engage with local communities as part of our ecological preservation initiatives under our sustainability and CSR programmes.
